Her second book "Implementing Lean Software Development: From Concept to Cash" is available for review on the web http://www.poppendieck.com/lsd.htm and is an excellent read. Lean Software Development shows software professionals how to achieve breakthrough quality, savings, speed, and business value by adapting the seven "lean" principles that have already revolutionized manufacturing and R&D. My code controlled telephone switching systems, high energy physics research, concept vehicles, and the makers and coaters used to manufacture 3M tape. I found the concepts weren't very difficult to grok; however, I found little detailed information was available online. The most classical ones are those from Mary Poppendieck, such as “Implementing Lean Software Development: from Concept to Cash”. Thus, the first step to implementing lean development is learning to see waste. Mary and Tom Poppendieck, 2006 (amazon). Independently, the following year, Robert “Bob” Charette in 1993 suggested the concept of “Lean Software Development” as part of his work exploring better ways of managing risk in software projects. Thin yet extremely rich book that is a perfect introduction into the lean thinking and its many sides. But, the concept definitely resurfaced in their following book, “Implementing Lean Software Development: From Concept to Cash” (2006), although relabeled as a chapter sub-heading “Myth: Predictions Create Predictability.”.
